HARTLEY ELECTORATE

Mar 28, 2017  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (15:54): On the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Indian Mela held by the Indian Australian Association of South Australia. All who attended—the many thousands who were there—would agree that it was a wonderful and auspicious occasion.

Hartley Electorate Speech

Mar 01, 2017  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (15:15): I wish to draw the attention of the house to two local issues in my community: a local primary school and a local bus stop that has been of enormous concern to local residents. I have in my hand a petition signed by about 100 local residents drawing the attention of the house to the demand for a safer bus stop location for bus stop 14 on Magill Road, which is the north-west side.

TOBACCO PRODUCTS REGULATION (VAPORISERS) AMENDMENT BILL

Feb 16, 2017  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (10:39): I rise today to close debate on what is a very important topic, and I would like to first and foremost thank all of those in the industry—the health industry, the e-cigarette industry, users, retailers and wholesalers—who have contributed to the debate along the way. I start today by referring to a News Corp article dated 17 January 2017, where it states:

TOBACCO PRODUCTS REGULATION (VAPORISERS) AMENDMENT BILL

Dec 01, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (10:32): Obtained leave and introduced a bill for an act to amend the Tobacco Products Regulation Act 1997. Read a first time.

ELECTORAL (LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL VOTING) (VOTER CHOICE) AMENDMENT BILL

Dec 01, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (16:55): I rise today to speak to the Electoral (Legislative Council Voting) (Voter Choice) Amendment Bill 2016 and, in doing so, indicate that I will not be the lead speaker for the opposition—I reserve that for my good colleague, the member for Bragg.

AUSTRALIA CHINA FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY

Dec 01, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (12:07): I move:

That this house—

(a) congratulates the Australia China Friendship Society on celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016;

(b) acknowledges the significant work and commitment of the Australia China Friendship Society's committee and volunteers, past and present, who continuously work towards building and promoting a friendship between the peoples of Australia and China; and

(c) acknowledges the importance of their establishment and the society's attempts at bringing to the Australian public a greater knowledge and understanding of China's rich cultural heritage.

ATTORNEY-GENERAL

Dec 01, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (15:23): I rise today to speak about a very unsettling matter that has been stirring this month, following the Attorney-General's controversial Senior Counsel appointment. The appointment has caused concern for many in the legal profession and has been displeasing and somewhat cringe-worthy to everyone else, to say the least. Indeed, members of this government are drifting further and further out of touch with the people of South Australia.

ELECTORAL (MISCELLANEOUS) AMENDMENT BILL

Nov 30, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (17:43): I rise to speak to the Electoral (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2016 and indicate that I will not be the lead speaker for the opposition. Whilst the bill is likely to pass this house, I wish to advise that we will be introducing amendments at some stage. We reserve our rights as to the timing of those amendments, but they may happen in this place, between the houses or in the other place.

STATUTES AMENDMENT AND REPEAL (SIMPLIFY) BILL

Nov 30, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (15:44): I rise today to speak to the Statutes Amendment and Repeal (Simplify) Bill 2016. I might just start where the member for Newland left off. He said that if we were to rely on the opposition (his words) for ideas he would be in trouble. I just want to remind the member for Newland that the idea of a repeal day was actually that of the Liberal Party. In my research before I was looking to speak on this bill, I saw that there was a Liberal Party document dated 3 April 2013 about a repeal day and removing redundant laws.

CARNEVALE ITALIAN FESTIVAL

Nov 17, 2016  |  speech

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (12:49): I move:

That this house—

(a) congratulates the Carnevale Italian Festival for celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2016;

(b) acknowledges the significant work and commitment of the Carnevale Italian Festival committee and volunteers, past and present, for continuously showcasing the vibrant and energetic Italian culture through the festival; and

(c) acknowledges the importance of their establishment, and the work they have done over the past 40 years in the promotion and preservation of Italian heritage and in doing so, enriching the multicultural landscape of South Australia.
