The Opposition is once again calling for urgent relief to be provided to the people of Whyalla, as uncertainty surrounding the future of its steelworks continues to mount.
With numerous businesses teetering on the edge of collapse, it’s critical that the Malinauskas Labor Government unlocks $50 million of funds already allocated for the Whyalla Steelworks - providing instant cash flow relief for those awaiting overdue payments.
Leader of the Opposition, Vincent Tarzia said that while the Government waits for GFG Alliance to settle its debts, contractors and small businesses remain in the dark.
“This Government has absolutely failed to provide any meaningful relief to the people of Whyalla during some of the most uncertain times in recent history," Mr Tarzia said.
“GFG Alliance is wholly responsible for paying its own bills, however, the Government needs to use every tool at its disposal to make sure businesses are supported while they’re awaiting payment.
“We’re talking about businesses that are struggling to keep staff on the floor and stay afloat, families that are struggling to pay their bills because of job losses and a community that desperately needs support.
“Spending time with these hardworking South Australians in the Spencer Gulf on Friday, it was clear that immediate cash flow is their biggest concern – yet the Premier remains distracted by managing the politics of his hydrogen hoax, blaming GFG Alliance for his failure.
“If the Government is committed to future steelmaking in the town of Whyalla, then these essential small businesses can’t go under. If they do, the reality is there will be nobody left to secure the future of this community.”
The Premier has also flagged a major announcement for Whyalla to media outlets, which is expected to be made on Friday.
“This is just further proof of this Government putting politics before people,” Shadow Minister for Energy and Net Zero, Stephen Patterson said.
“If the Premier has a major announcement, why not make it now – Friday is three long days away for the people of Whyalla. If it’s support, why not announce it today, rather than later this week when it suits Labor’s political agenda.”
