Santos and Beach Energy’s world leading Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage Project up and running

The Liberal Opposition welcomes the official opening of the Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project - a joint project with outstanding South Australian based companies Santos and Beach Energy.

The CCS Project, situated next to the Moomba Gas Plant in the Cooper Basin, is one of the largest CCS projects in the world, and will have the potential to store up to 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 per year - equivalent to around 28 per cent of the total emissions reduction achieved in Australia’s electricity sector last year.

This project was keenly supported by both the former Liberal State and Federal Governments, receiving approvals from the former Liberal State Government and registering under the former Liberal Federal Government’s Commonwealth Emissions Reduction Fund.

The final investment decision for the Moomba CCS Project was made in November 2021.

Leader of the Opposition, Vincent Tarzia welcomed the official opening of the CCS Project, which began during the term of the former Liberal State Government.

“The former Liberal State Government strongly supported Santos and Beach Energy with its Moomba CCS Project, which is slated to have created 230 jobs during construction and sustain more during its operation,” Mr Tarzia said.

“This is another example of practical action on carbon emissions reduction by the Liberal Party, striking a balance between addressing emissions and creating jobs while stimulating the South Australia’s economy.”

Shadow Minister for Energy and Net Zero, Stephen Patterson added that this project is an example of South Australia leading the world in practical carbon emissions reduction.

“CCS recognised by the International Energy Agency as playing a crucial role in reducing emissions in the energy sector,” Mr Patterson said.

“To meet global climate goals, the industry must scale CCS deployment by a hundredfold by 2050. South Australia is now leading the way in this transformative sector, positioning itself at the forefront of a rapidly growing global industry.

“In further good news, the Cooper and Eromanga basins have the potential to store over 20 million tonnes of CO2 per year for more than 50 years. This could mark the beginning of a new industry – one that creates jobs and drives economic growth for South Australia.

“The Liberal Opposition strongly supports the gas industry in South Australia, not just because of its importance with electricity generation, but also for its role in key sectors as agriculture and construction.”
