Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (11:54): If you save one life you are a hero, if you save 100 lives then you are a nurse, as the saying goes. I also rise today to commend this motion to the house which recognises International Nurses Day, which is celebrated annually on 12 May, and which acknowledges this year's theme, Nurses: a Force For Change: Care Effective, Cost Effective, and congratulates all South Australian nurses on their dedication, professionalism and the pivotal role they play in the advancement of the health of all South Australians.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (11:27): I also rise today to support the Fire and Emergency Services (Volunteer Charters) Amendment Bill 2015. I absolutely commend the member for Morphett for the strong interest he takes in this area and the strong advocate that he has been for many years for the volunteer community.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (16:21): They say that the foundation of every state is based on the education of its youth, and let me say that I am extremely proud of the youth I saw last night. I had great pleasure in attending the 20^th Annual Graduation Night hosted by the Young Druze Professionals Association. This is an event where the Druze community celebrates the graduation of its youth from secondary school and also from tertiary education.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (11:50): I also rise today to contribute to the Supply Bill. May I say that I found the month or so away from this place a fantastic opportunity to really wear out some shoe leather and embed myself in the electorate and, most importantly, listen to the electorate and hear the concerns of the constituents in my area—what they are seeking and what their needs and concerns are. It was a wonderful opportunity, and it also allowed me to see and hear firsthand how discontented people are with the current government in South Australia. The state can certainly do much better—and it needs to do much better. Those needs are certainly not being met by this government at the moment.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (12:20): I also rise today to acknowledge that ANZAC Day, 25 April 2015, will commemorate the centenary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. I too pay my respects to the over 416,000 Australians who enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and the millions of others who fought and supported the defence efforts of this country since. I also pay tribute to all Australian service men and women, support personnel and animals that have been injured, traumatised or killed in action.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (16:19): I agree with the comments made by the member for Unley. I would like to think that members of these boards and committees were awarded their positions based on merit and nothing else. That could just be my utopia, but I would like to think that in an ideal world that would happen. It should happen. For what reason should people be appointed to these positions, positions that are funded by the taxpayer, other than merit?

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (11:46): 'You have to be an optimist; why involve yourself in issues of public policy unless you are?'—Malcolm Fraser. In my late teenage years I visited a giant in our area, Nick Bianco, in his office, and there was a coaster on Nick's desk, and it read 'Life was not meant to be easy.' I remember asking Mr Bianco what this was about and him explaining to me that it was a quote from one of the greatest, if not the greatest, prime minister of all time, Malcolm Fraser.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (16:49): I also rise to speak on the Rail Safety National Law (South Australia) (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill. As many of my colleagues have alluded to on this side of the chamber, it is clear that this government simply is not doing enough in terms of rail, infrastructure and transport projects. The Labor Party does two things very well in terms of campaigning. One, is to campaign on fear and, two, is to campaign on hope. At the last state election, I have to hand it to them, they sold a lie to many people in Hartley because they offered them the hope of two things relating to this area. One, was that there would be trams on The Parade in the not too distant future, and we are still waiting for trams on The Parade. Two, is they made a promise that they would offer a parking solution in Paradise, and we are still waiting for that.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (16:58): I also have significant issues and concerns with this bill and, whilst I can count and know that the bill is likely to move past this chamber, I have no doubt whatsoever that the bill will be subject to intense scrutiny in the other place.

Mr TARZIA (Hartley) (12:42): I commend the member for Taylor for her motion today. I know that this cause and other great causes are dear to her heart and it is fantastic that she has raised this issue in this place. I also recognise that 21 March 2015 is World Down Syndrome Day and congratulate Down Syndrome International on the 10^th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. I also acknowledge the continuing work of the Down Syndrome Society of South Australia in their support of families and carers of those living with Down syndrome.
