Opposition calls for direct flights from Adelaide to India

Sunday 23 March, 2025

The Opposition is calling on the Government to help start direct flights between Adelaide and India to boost trade and tourism.

In recent years, India has grown to become South Australia’s fourth-largest export market and has maintained that position for the past 12 months.

Exports to India broke the $1 billion barrier in 2023 but are starting to decline, with a 14.8 per cent decrease year-on-year revealed in the latest ABS data release.

“India is key for us here in South Australia and it’s vital we keep the momentum up. Direct flights from Adelaide to India will supercharge trade, tourism, and education,” Mr Tarzia said.

“India sends nearly 8700 students to South Australia, making it our top source of international students. It’s also our fifth-biggest visitor market, adding $113 million to the economy each year.”

Currently, there are no direct flights between Adelaide and India, despite there being high demand for travel – meaning people have to stop-over in other states to get there.

“Right now, there are no direct flights. Direct flights would make it easier to visit, study, and do business here in South Australia,” Shadow Minister for Trade, Industry and Investment, Tim Whetstone said.

“Freight would also benefit from these flights, with planes offering a faster option than boats for trade with India, one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

“India continues to be a growing market and a core focus for South Australia, following a bipartisan Government and Opposition trade mission in 2023.

“The Premier’s delegation to India will mark the third senior Government official to travel there, so we must see a tangible outcome and that could be through launching direct flights.

“That’s why we’re calling on the Government to act fast. Let’s make Adelaide a straight shot to India and give South Australia every opportunity to benefit from this valuable market.”
