The Leader of the Opposition, Vincent Tarzia is today urging South Australians to support Foodbank, one of the state’s leading charities.
“The cost of living is hurting South Australians – I was shocked to learn that right now there are close to 300,000 households across our state and the Northern Territory experiencing food insecurity,” said Mr Tarzia.
“Members of the Opposition have been hearing from constituents right across the state that it is becoming increasingly hard to put food on the table.
“Today, I applaud the ABC for using its annual fundraiser to raise the Foodbank profile.
“There are many ways people can support Foodbank, through cash donations, fundraising or volunteering and I’m very pleased that the Opposition team has decided to make a commitment to Foodbank beyond just today.
“We will be volunteering our time to Foodbank in a way that we hope makes a small difference to the people who are doing it tough.
In 2023/24 650 volunteers donated their time by assisting Foodbank in their warehouse at Edwardstown, in their Food Hubs or as transport drivers or fundraising or office activities.
The Foodbank Hunger Report 2024 contains some alarming reading including a map which provides a picture of food insecurity.
Other alarming statistics include 48% of households with less than $30,000 in income are food insecure, up 5% since 2022.
“We know more and more South Australians are hungry, I urge anyone who can, to dig deep, to assist Foodbank.”
