The Labor Government has been embarrassed into acting months after the toxic algal bloom was first detected – a disgraceful insult to the industries, communities, and livelihoods devastated across South Australia.
While the initial funding is a start, the Opposition was shocked to learn that the State Government had only made its formal request for support on Sunday, highlighting Labor’s bungled response to this environmental crisis.
Leader of the Opposition, Vincent Tarzia said the federal funding announcement is typical Labor – a figure that lacks detail and offers no clarity to those who need help now.
“These are hollow words from a Government that only months ago claimed it was ‘helpless in the force of nature’ and accused the Opposition of creating ‘fear, panic and division’ for calling this out for what it is, a natural disaster,” Mr Tarzia said.
“We have been listening to industry and communities along the coast for months and consistently advocating for the thousands of South Australians who have had their livelihoods crippled by this algal bloom.
“In stark contrast, the Premier has only just parachuted into the conversation without a plan, hoping a grand announcement will ease the political pressure on his Government due to its woeful response.
“What this crisis and the people at the heart of it actually need is genuine consultation and clarity on the path forward but instead, they’ve been met by State and Federal Labor Governments that are at odds with each other over whether this should be declared a natural disaster.”
Shadow Minister for Environment, David Basham added that it was disappointing to see that the Federal Minster for Environment, Murray Watt’s first stop in South Australia was to face the media, rather than the people and communities at the centre of this crisis.
“The Opposition called on Murray Watt to visit South Australia to see the algal bloom for himself, and instead of stopping by the worst-affected beaches first, he went straight to a press conference,” Mr Basham said.
“We welcome any funding to support those impacted by this environmental crisis but $14 million is a drop in the ocean, given there is no end in sight for the devastation left in its wake.
“The fact that the State Government can find $50 million for a golf course, yet has so far only committed half a million for the fishing industry tells you everything you need to know about its priorities.
“The State Opposition will continue to advocate for funding to reach the people, communities and industries who have been crying out for help, as well as for a Royal Commission to be launched.
“A Royal Commission will ensure this crisis is independently investigated, free from Government interference, which is exactly what South Australians deserve.”
