On 28 March 2019 we held another community forum on the topic of ‘Remaining active in your senior years’. There was a terrific turnout to hear Associate Professor Gaynor Parfitt, an Associate Professor in Exercise and Sport Psychology from the University of South Australia, speak on the topic of remaining active in our senior years.

Associate Professor Gaynor Parfitt stated that 75% of Australians over 65 years are not sufficiently active. Her recommendations from this included 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity most days of the week, strength and balance exercises at least twice a week and sitting less by breaking up long periods of sitting. We also heard that the types of exercise/physical activity that are good for you depend on what you enjoy.

Associate Professor Parfitt also spoke about the intensity of activities and how this matters to achieve health benefits quickly. However, if the intensity set is not tolerable, you are likely to quit, therefore it is important to control the intensity to your own pace. Another important topic that Associate Professor Parfitt touched on was brain activation and how this is increased following physical activity.

The event was a great success and we had an incredible turnout. If you would like any information on remaining active in your senior years, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
