Today the Liberal Opposition has announced their commitment to deliver a safety upgrade to the Marino Train Station to deter crime and anti-social behaviour, and ensure commuters feel safe using our transport system.
The safety upgrade will include the installation of CCTV security cameras across the platform, car park, entry and exit points, and the installation of an emergency phone on the platform. The current shelter on the platform will also be extended to provide better coverage and waterproofing.
This commitment will also deliver new entry and exit points onto the platform from the southern end to improve commuter access to the station.
The former Liberal Government delivered a number of upgrades to train and tram stations across Adelaide to improve the safety and security of passengers during its term in Government. However, it is clear that the safety of commuters in the southern suburbs is not a priority of the Malinauskas Labor Government.
“We have listened to residents who are frustrated with this Government’s inaction on making the Marino Train Station safe for commuters,” Leader of the Opposition, Vincent Tarzia said.
“That’s why we have made a commitment to deliver critical safety upgrades for the people of Marino and the wider community who utilise these services.
“We want to ensure that commuters feel safe when catching public transport and we know that CCTV cameras not only make passengers feel more comfortable, but also help authorities to identify alleged offenders and respond to incidents when necessary.
“Community safety is of the highest importance and a Tarzia Liberal Government will deliver these urgently needed upgrades to the Marino Train Station.”
Liberal Candidate for Black, Amanda Wilson said “We have heard the concerns of local residents who have been hesitant to take the train due to safety concerns and inadequate facilities.”
“These enhancements will not only improve commuter safety but also boost community confidence in our local train services.
“CCTV cameras are a proven and much-needed deterrent against anti-social behaviour to make our public transport system an appealing and reliable option.
Liberal Candidate for Boothby, Nicolle Flint said “Concerns about crime and community safety in Boothby are at an all time high under the state and federal Labor Governments, and recent incidents in and around the Marino train station provide distressing examples of Labor’s failures.”
“Residents’ concerns have fallen on deaf ears with the Malinauskas Labor Government and we know safety is a genuine concern for passengers who are now choosing to take other forms of transport.
“We want passengers and transport staff to feel safe at the Marino Train Station and know these upgrades will make a significant difference in encouraging more people to use public transport.”
The Liberal Opposition recognises and honours the work of community advocate and local campaigner Darren Bailhache who has volunteered countless hours gathering over a thousand signatures for a petition anticipated to be tabled in the House of Assembly.
